My Clippers’ flints have rarely lasted more than a couple of butane refills, yet the lighter’s design is so overall clever that I find them a pleasure to use for the price. And when the factory flints pass away I save these inexpensive torches for sometime down the road when I might invest in replacement flints.Well today’s that day! When the usual oversized shipping box arrived I quickly dumped the tiny golden beauties out of their tiny glass bottle and onto my jewelry scale - 64.8 grams (or 41.7 pennyweight as they do appear gold) - hey now, my ten bucks was possibly well spent.For the uninitiated, the flint-holder / flicker-assembly / herb-tamper is removed by pinching the friction wheel tightly and pulling straight up. The bottom of it unscrews, either with a small flat-tip screwdriver, pliers, or an even more Herculean pinch than it took to remove. Though tight, the spring-loaded thingy launches out after a few lefty-loosies so a new flint can drop in. Reinserting the retainer spring while a bit tricky isn’t impossible, only a minor test of normal human patience.On to a pyrotechnic test...Upon first flick no flames were formed. Repeated flicking didn’t help so with the gas button depressed I used a BiC to get a flame going. After warming up a few seconds each Clipper went on to light on their own, albeit after a few more initial flicks to the new flints. (Perhaps the wheel has to round down the top of a new flint..?)Thinking performance still wasn’t optimal it dawned on me that my Clippers might just need some cleaning love. I used isopropyl alcohol on cotton swabs to get each nozzle’s orifice nice and shiny and ready to spew forth that hyper-refined fuel I like to spoil my refillables with. Tah-Dah!! Ignition was now achieved with only one or two firm flicks.I’m quite happy with these flints as replacements for my Clipper lighters. They certainly represent a good value, enabling a certain prized ‘PEZ’ collection to return to combustion service.
